Recipes with the Slow Cooker

Slow Cookers (or Crock Pots) are back and are a great way to cook hassle-free, tasty food. Dishes that benefit are those with longer cooking times such as: Stews, Curries and Casseroles. Check out my quick guide for Slow Cooker Recipes below.

Not for the Slow Cooker - It's best to steer clear of fish and pasta in the slow cooker to avoid the risk of over-cooking and soggy-ness - nobody wants that!

Timing - Use the conversion chart below for times for traditional oven-cooked dishes.

Pantry Essentials

A major part of cooking from scratch is having the right ingredients. Check out my list of kitchen cupboard essentials below.

If your food storage cupboard is fully stocked with the essentials, you'll be surprised at how little you have to buy when cooking your meals from scratch. With a little help, I came up with the following Pantry Organiser.

It may look daunting at first, but if you're just starting out, your food cabinet will quickly stock up as you go along.

Meals to Go - Reheating

If you don't have time to cook from scratch each day (and let's be honest, most of us don't), for tasty meals to go, you can make your dinners taste just as good reheated as when you first cooked them. In fact, some recipes such as stews and chilli's taste even better reheated because the flavours have had a chance to mingle into the meat.

So when reheating your meals, there are a few important things to consider to make sure you get it right each time.

Freezing Leftovers and Meals

Freeze lasagna? Freeze Casseroles? Freeze Soup? Rule of thumb – YOU CAN FREEZE ANYTHING (well most things!). Check out these tips on how freezing meals can make cooking from scratch work for you.

Smoothies - Instead of painstakingly chopping fruit each time you have a smoothie, chop all the fruit, mix it up, separate it into sandwich bags and put them in the freezer – giving you bags of smoothie mix ready to blend.

Cooking from Scratch to Save Money

We hate it when people say cooking from scratch is more expensive. When cooking in bulk you save money. But if you're yet to be convinced, check out these handy tips.

Plan - Plan your weekly meals (that's right, 7 days worth of dinners). After the first month (or so), you will be surprised how many ingredients you've already stocked up to cook a full-blown meal. Then you'll only need a couple of ingredients for each meal you cook. Now thats cheap cooking!
